Reclaiming Memory: Pal Szenes
Pal Szenes was born on March 14, 1936, in the multicultural city of Subotica (Szabadka). His early childhood was abruptly extinguished by systematic persecution and the mass deportations of the Jewish population during the final stages of the Holocaust. In June 1944, at eight years of age, Pal was deported to the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was murdered in a gas chamber immediately following selection on the railway ramp.
In his portrait of Pal Szenes, Marek Hausmann transforms archival trace into a lasting act of presence and restitution. Utilizing layered oil pigments, tactile impasto, and nuanced chiaroscuro, the painting brings the viewer face-to-face with the boy’s piercing, innocent gaze, rescuing his individual existence from historical oblivion. The work honors his stolen future while asserting his enduring human dignity and name.
