Stolen Futures: Marika Kundler
Marika Kundler was born in Kaposvár, Hungary, on February 20, 1936. In June 1944, during the swift and catastrophic mass deportations of Hungarian Jewry, eight-year-old Marika was transported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Immediately following the arrival selection, she was murdered in a gas chamber.
In his portrait of Marika Kundler, Marek Hausmann elevates the historical archive into a profound, visual testament. Employing rich, tactile layers of oil paint, controlled chiaroscuro, and a focused engagement with the young girl’s gaze, the artist rescues her singular identity and stolen humanity from the anonymity of the Shoah.
