Cultural, Historical & Educational Context: The Water Carrier and Family as the Backbone of the Shtetl „Salt of the Earth” honors the most modest yet vital stratum of the pre-war Jewish shtetl. The title draws upon the biblical idiom celebrating humble, upright souls whose daily labor sustains the world. In the historic Ashkenazi community, impoverished laborers and tradesmen — such as the water carrier — formed the essential bedrock that enabled the town’s daily life to function.

From an educational and social perspective, Marek Hausmann crafts an archetype of human dignity and survival. Centered in the composition is the water carrier’s family: the patriarch bearing the wooden yoke on his shoulders, accompanied by his wife cradling their young child.
