Severed Youth: Daisy Lowositzová
Daisy Lowositzová was born in Prague on April 2, 1930. Her youth was brutally interrupted by the terror of Nazi occupation and internment in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) transit ghetto. On October 23, 1944—during the final, desperate phases of the Holocaust—fourteen-year-old Daisy was deported on one of the final transport trains to the Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, where she was murdered in a gas chamber upon arrival.
In his portrait of Daisy Lowositzová, Marek Hausmann moves beyond the detachment of photographic archives to execute a powerful act of painterly restitution. Through rich oil impasto, sensitive tonal transitions, and an unflinching focus on the adolescent girl’s expressive gaze, the canvas reclaims her singular existence from the anonymity of the Shoah. The work confronts the viewer with the profound tragedy of a stolen future, reinstating her individuality, name, and eternal dignity.
This painting is strictly non-commercial and forms an integral part of the curated series „Auschwitz: Children of Jacob”, dedicated exclusively to institutional display in museums, historical synagogues, and international memorial institutions.
